The sun is shining, and you want to finally get your garden sorted, there is however nothing more stressful than getting a garden ready from when it’s a big mess. Part of the pleasure of gardening is sharing our hard work and creation with others however the days leading up to a garden party or barbeque can be filled with both doubt and worry. We are suddenly confronted with the reality that our garden is looking a bit worse for wear. This can be quickly improved however by doing the following.
Step One: Assess your garden
Getting the garden into shape isn’t hard! Especially if you first decide exactly what needs to be done, and plan your workload efficiently. Take a moment to observe your garden, this determines which issues that stand out the most and decide which actions to take by choosing the most noticeable aspects.
Find the gathering spots
At barbeques or house visits people can tend to flock together, think about where people are going to be – if it’s a shady spot on a hot day or a sunny area on a cool spring morning?
What sticks out? When you are standing at these gathering spaces you can begin to identify problems that they are likely to notice based on the things that catch your eye – is it a broken patio stone? A patch of weeds? A dirty patio?
Step Two: Resolve the Problems at hand
Once you figure out what needs to be improved, you can turn your attention towards ensuring that these spaces are tidy and clean, in preparation for all of the enhancements that are to come.
Prune the trees, remove dead plants and get rid of any broken branches. You should do this a day or so in advance so that it still looks tidy on the big day.
Eliminate the Culprits
Pull away the obvious weeds – don’t get carried away though! No one is going to notice a couple of clovers sprouting from beneath the followers. Large weeds on the path/patio need to be gone, that goes without saying, but focus your energy where it needs to be.
Sweeping the patio and deck is going to make the whole garden look better, a cracked or stained patio can be resolved by popping a flower pot over it. Also, take the opportunity to wipe down the outdoor furniture, be them Adirondack Chairs or other furniture and stow away items that are not necessary for the party.
This is the ACE method
A – Assess the garden
C – Clean the problems
E – Enhance what you have
This is a surefire way of having an amazing garden set up, all ready for a garden gathering! It’s also a great method to generally keep on top of things and maintain your garden well for your enjoyment. So while we await the easing of lockdown restrictions and social gatherings again, you can enjoy your outdoor space to its utmost degree.
